Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the New Dolby Atmos Theater of Gateway Mall

Both me and my son are Star Wars fans.  I think his curiosity about Star Wars started because I bought him lots of reading materials about Star Wars before.  My son read all the Star Wars books I gave him which made him very knowledgeable about Star Wars--he knows a lot about Star Wars than me, haha--and even do a lot of research on the Internet.  It's so weird that I was the one asking him questions about Star Wars when in fact all of the six episodes were shown before he was born, haha.

My son asked me if we can watch the latest Star Wars installment this month.  I said I am not sure yet because of budgetary constraints.  My son is very kind to understand that; he didn't feel bad about it and he just said that we will just wait for it to be shown on cable channel.

Since the latest Star Wars episode will be shown on movie theaters this month, the curiosity of the people about Star Wars has awakened.  I've been seeing a lot of posts about Star Wars on social media.  He re-read all of the Star Wars books that I gave him.  He got delighted when he found out that all six episodes of Star Wars will be shown on Star Movies.  He said to me that we will do movie marathon and we are not going anywhere just to catch up with the story.

We were blessed to be able to watch the advance screening of the latest episode of Star Wars (Episode VII: The Force Awakens) last December 16, 2015 in the biggest Dolby Atmos Cinema in the country which is located at Gateway Mall, Araneta Center.

The Dolby Atmos Cinema was also launched in time for the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  This movie theater features a revolutionary audio platform that creates powerful, moving audio using audio objects and overhead speakers, Gateway Mall's Dolby Atmos Cinema boasts of sounds that come from all directions, the dialogue and music of the onscreen story move all around the audience in three-dimensional space, transporting them into the scenes and putting them in the middle of the action.

Compared to regular theaters, Dolby Atmos Cinema has the most number of speakers with 53.5 sound system (53 individual surround channels and 5 subwoofers).  Each speaker is powered independently and gets its own separate audio feed.  In effect, the movement of every sound in the scene is reproduced in all three dimensions.

This is how Dolby Atmos Cinema 5 looks like from the inside.  Very wide theater!

The Dolby Atmos technology gives content creators unprecedented control of the placement and movement of sound within the movie theater.  Sounds can be placed and moved anywhere in the cinema's three-dimensional space. The Dolby Atmos Cinema processor then determines which of a cinema's three-dimensional space.  The Dolby Atmos Cinema processor then determines which of a cinema's huge array of front, back, side, and overhead speakers it will use to recreate this lifelike movement.

With sounds coming from all directions, the cinema is filled with astonishing clarity, richness, detail, and depth.  This creates a multidimensional sound system that makes audiences feel as if they are inside the film and not just watching it.

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the seventh installment in the Star Wars film series and the first to be directed by J.J. Abrams.  Set around 30 years after the events of the Return of the Jedi, the sequel follows the adventures of the new lead characters Finn (John Boyega), Rey (Daisy Ridley), and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) as they join forces with the original characters Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) to fight Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and his broadsword lightsaber.  The film also features Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux, Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke, and Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata.

It was fortunate to see that the first movie to be shown on Dolby Atmos Cinema at Gateway Mall will be the latest installment of Star Wars.  Star Wars: The Force Awakens was engineered to fit in Dolby Atmos audio technology.  "We are very excited to screen Star Wars: The Force Awakens at Gateway Dolby Atmos Cinema 5.  With its revolutionary sound technology, the theater, will be filled with breathtaking audio and the audience will feel like they are inside the Star Wars universe.  This will definitely a fantastic and world-class movie experience not just for Star Wars fans but for the whole family," Jorge Araneta, CEO of Araneta Group said.

As much as I wanted to explain to you my movie experience at Dolby Atmos Cinema here on my blog, it's very difficult to put it in writing.  But one thing's for sure, it's one of a kind, it's not your typical movie date that all the sounds that you can hear from the movie will only come from one speaker.  Here, the sound really travels all around the cinema, from left to right and up to the ceiling, depending on the action happening on the story, as if you're really part of the movie.

I would really recommend that you watch Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Dolby Atmos Cinema so that you can really feel the plot and the action of the movie.  Don't miss to have a 360-degree experience watching this, you won't regret it.

May the Force be with you!

Disney on Ice: Magical Ice Festival this Holiday Season at Smart Araneta Coliseum

When we were kids, my parents will always let me and my brothers experience Christmas by bringing us to Araneta Center to do Christmas shopping (no SM Megamall nor Robinson's Galleria yet), see the Christmas display at COD, and watch shows at Araneta Coliseum.  Those Christmas memories were very special to me because modernization and globalization improved a lot of things around us so what happened in the past, stays in the past; it's already part of the history.

Since those memories were very meaningful to me, I also wanted to continue this Christmas tradition with my son.

Two years ago, me, my mom, and Kib watched Disney on Ice: Treasure Trove.  He enjoyed watching it that until now, he has been wearing the Mickey Mouse crown we bought during the show whenever he feels like playing pretend play.  Last year, we didn't watch Disney on Ice because the story revolved around Disney princesses.  For sure my son won't enjoy it, haha.

This year, we will be watching Disney on Ice: Magical Ice Festival this coming Christmas break, wee!

Now on it's 33rd show worldwide, Disney on Ice presents Magical Ice Festival will once capture the hearts of the Filipino fans--both parents and their children--who will watch the show at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

This year's grand production will wow viewers as it features Disney's The Little Mermaid, Tangled, Beauty and the Beast, and --for the first time-- the Academy Award-winning and number one animated feature film of all time, Frozen!

Disney on Ice presents Magical Ice Festival showcases a medley of splendid set elements, impressive light display and costume pieces, along with show-stopping performances by a cast of world-class skaters!

Kib having his photo opportunity with one of the performers during the press conference of Disney on Ice featuring Magical Ice Festival

One of the highlights of the show will be when Ariel (The Little Mermaid) be slowly being pulled upwards and rapidly twirl above the ice.  This is the first time that Ariel's transformation from mermaid to human be captured like this in a production.  The scenes selected to be shown on ice were the ones never done before.  This makes Magical Ice Festival special because the whole production also worked hard on the details to make all the scenes 'ice-perfect'.

One of the most-awaited part of the show is that people can see Anna and Elsa and the rest of the Frozen characters come alive on the ice!  People have been wanting to see that Frozen will be an ice skating performance just like the rest of the Disney animated films.

It is my dream to have my picture taken with any of the Disney characters (I haven't been to any Disneyland).  You can see how kilig I am during the photo opportunity.

Of course, Disney on Ice will not be complete without the appearance of the original Disney characters.  We can still see Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Goofy perform on ice during the show.

Celebrate the Yuletide season with your loved ones by watching Disney on Ice presents Magical Ice Festival from December 25, 2015 until January 3, 2016.  Tickets are available at TicketNet and you may also call 911-5555 for more inquiries.

Want to Lose Weight? Here are Some Tips

If you're my friend on Facebook or if you follow me on Instagram or if you read my blog (haha), then you will know that I'm into balik-alindog program.  I am happy to say that I've lost 20 pounds since 2014.  The progress may be slow--some will say--, but then I am not really after losing weight only; I really wanted to maintain a healthy lifestyle.  A lot of people say that I look good these days and I feel proud of my achievements.

A lot of people have been asking me, "How did you do it?"  Honestly, I don't know what to say because basically, I didn't do anything special.  I just exercise and eat healthy food.  Sometimes I still eat not-so healthy food but I eat them in moderation.  I don't follow a special diet plan because I don't want to make an impression to my son that I'm not eating healthily.  I prepare food that me and my son can both enjoy.

Weight loss can be a struggle for most people if they do it for the wrong reasons.  Weight loss shouldn't have a deadline.  Just make it a habit to have an active lifestyle and to eat healthy food and you may never realize that one day, all of your clothes have loosen up :)

Okay, okay, I'll give concrete tips.  These tips are from Cohen Lifestyle Centre and I've followed the tips given below.  Just a gentle reminder though, these tips won't work if you will not develop self-discipline.

According to the Cohen’s Lifestyle Centre, gaining or losing weight is affected by multiple factors, including nutrition, genetics, psychology, behavior, and environment. While food choices and physical activity significantly affect your weight gain, achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is most likely successful by following a healthy lifestyle throughout your lifetime.

This was what housewife Edgina Ty discovered when she began gaining weight due to having polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis, and the side-effects of the medication for these illnesses.

Here are some lifestyle tips for weight-related problems, which Ms. Ty has followed:

  • Be a mindful eater. Manage your food appetite and cut down excessive food cravings. Eat at least three times a day at the same schedule to keep your metabolism balanced. Avoid skipping meals because you may end up starving and overeating later. Also, take into consideration the amount and the nutrient content of the foods that you are eating. A well-balanced diet of fruits, vegetables and lean proteins can give you energy, keep your blood sugar stable and keep you feeling full longer. “Treat food as a medicine that will help your body heal, make the commitment to a better eating lifestyle,” says Ty.

  • Drink plenty of water. Always drink lots of water to rehydrate, regulate your body’s temperature and cleanse your body of toxic wastes. Water also keeps your metabolism burning and acts as an appetite suppressant, which can reduce your food intake. Drinking plenty of water also leads to frequent urination, which helps you lose extra pounds of water weight.

  • Get enough sleep. When you’re short on sleep, you may feel too tired to prepare healthy meals, exercise and perform other physical activities that can make you sweat and burn fats. Your body also makes less insulin, a hormone that converts sugar and other food into energy, and produces more grelin, a hormone which signals your brain to eat more food. The hormone cortisol also spikes up, causing you to feel more stressed and craving for comfort foods.

  • Get yourself moving. Regular exercise and active lifestyle are effective ways to keep your body fit and strong. Physical activity helps you feel energized throughout the day, prevents and reduces high blood pressure and improves your libido. It also helps lower your stress hormone level, which in turn relieves tension and reduces anxiety. However, do not break your body with intensive workouts, especially if your metabolism is not working well. Brisk walking done five times a week can be sufficient.

  • Consult with your doctor. Weight changes and obesity can sometimes be the result of an underlying sickness, which may range from hormonal imbalance to a possible malfunction in the digestive system. Hormone-caused obesity can be difficult to treat. Ty shares, “Keeping a healthy weight through diet and exercise was effective then. But when I started my medications for PCOS and endometriosis, I started gaining weight. I got depressed and turned to overeating for a year so I ballooned to 156lbs.”

Meanwhile, weight loss greatly improves obesity-related conditions like hypertension, diabetes, arthritis and infertility among others. It is best to assess your overall health and fitness by consulting a medical professional. Your doctor can treat illnesses that indirectly affect your weight and can also recommend healthy ways to manage your body weight and overall health.

  • Follow a safe and successful weight-loss program. If you need a professional intervention for your weight problems, go for a program that is medically proven to be safe and effective. One such intervention is the Cohen’s Lifestyle Program, a rapid weight loss and wellness program based on the international medical research by Dr. Rami Cohen. It is also the program that Ms. Ty follows.

The Cohen’s Lifestyle Program is a highly personalized program which recommends eating plans to clients based on the unique bio-chemical profile of their blood. The doctors will recommend food that will correct the imbalance of hormones that causes weight gain and kick-start the body’s natural ability to burn fat rapidly and safely.

The program has taught Ms. Ty discipline in eating, drinking, sleeping better and becoming more active. In her own words, “What I appreciate about Cohen’s Lifestyle Program is that it teaches you the simplicity of food preparation and the discipline of eating properly at the right time. And you see the results right away. It’s like seeing the evidence of the phrase, ‘You are what you eat.’ Working out is also more effective now because it balances my diet.”

After 5 months in the program, she is currently 122.9 pounds (55.9 kilos) down from her starting point of 155.5 pounds (70.7 kilos). With its principle of using food as medicine, she has also become less dependent on specialized medication for her condition, adding, “Some of my physical pains are gone. It has regulated, if not totally eradicated my PCOS.”

Ms. Edgina Ty then and now

OMF Literature Releases New Children's Book, "The ABCs of Jesus' Resurrection"

I love books.  I also wanted Kib to have a great passion for books.  Every now and then, whenever budget allows, I always buy books for Kib.  Every day, Kib reads books from his bookshelf.  He even amazes me that he knows a lot more than I am and he would even say, "Why you didn't know that Mommy?"

My son also loves reading the Bible.  He has two Bibles, Action Bible and Adventure Bible.  He loves reading stories from the Bible.  He even asks me questions about some stories and to be honest, I am really challenged in answering his questions about the Bible.  I always pray to God to give me wisdom in answering Kib's questions about the Word of God.

I feel blessed to be part of the launch of one of the children's storybooks of OMF Literature, "The ABCs of Jesus' Resurrection" last December 3, 2015 at Christ's Commission Fellowship Center in Frontera Verde.

The book's front cover

This book is written by Pastor Vince Burke and illustrated by Lorra Angbue-Te.  In this book, children can learn about the Resurrection of Jesus Christ through each letter of the alphabet.  Written in rhymed verse, the book shares key concepts of the Resurrection in simple terms which children as young as five years old can appreciate.

"The truth that Jesus Christ died and rose again to save us is the most important message children can know and believe," Pastor Vince Burke wrote in his introduction of the book.  Pasto Vince Burke has been with the teaching and preaching ministry of Christ's Commission Fellowship since 1994.  He is an American with Filipino heart.  He already knows some Filipino words because he has been staying in the Philippines for 18 years together with his wife Lori and four children.  In addition, he said that the reason for writing this book is because Jesus loves children so much and they are vitally important to His kingdom.

"The ABCs of Jesus' Resurrection" is Pastor Vince Burke's first published children's book.

Accompanying the text are the warm and wonderful illustrations of watercolor artist Lorra Elena Angbue-Te.  "Illustrating The ABCs of Jesus' Resurrection was definitely an emotional roller coaster for me.  There were days when I felt so under-skilled to finish the task entrusted to me, especially since this was my first solo book as an illustrator and I was dedicating it to God.  But on the other hand, I also felt so much grace and strength because of that same reason.  This year, God has given me so much more than I deserve, and this project felt like my song of praise for Him.  It became my big thank you to Him," she narrates.  Lorra is a member of Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (INK).  She also has a blog, starsofdreams.com and a weekly online comic strip "Honeycomb" which she manages together with her husband Elbert.

"The ABCs of Jesus' Resurrection" can be used as a Sunday School material, a reference in the Bible class, or simply a tool for teaching young children the alphabet.

Yay!  Kib's excited to read the book!

Give this book as a gift to children this Christmas!

The ABCs of Jesus' Resurrection will be available at OMF Lit bookshops, Passages bookshops, PCBS, National Book Store and other leading bookstores nationwide for only 70 pesos each.  This book will also soon to be available in e-book format.  For more information about the book, you may call OMF Lit bookshop at +632 531 4303 local 411 or email hiyas@omflit.com.

#MakeTimeForDad: Celebrating World COPD Day

I attended last year's celebration of World COPD Day (please see my blog about this event here), and I was blessed to be invited again this year.  Although my father didn't have that disease, I have a huge concern on parents having an incurable disease so that is why I really made an effort to be a part of this celebration.  This is also my way of honoring my father for having a strong conviction on maintaining a good health.  I know how it feels to see your parent suffer from a life-threatening disease and you, as a child, can only do so much.  It's really hard to see a loved one slowly deteriorating and you cannot break down in front of them.  You have to show that you're strong; most of the time you cry silently.

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) became popular due to Comedy King Dolphy.  He died of that illness.  Dolphy's journey as a COPD patient has become the most familiar patient story for Filipinos as his constant hospitalizations and deteriorating health were always part of the news.  He was an epitome of a total entertainer whose talent in acting, singing, and dancing was honed through years of experience and hard work.  His talent was equaled only by his work ethic as he lived by credo, "The show must go on," even after he got sick and was diagnosed with COPD.

Dolphy's battle with COPD

In the last few years of his life, while Dolphy continued to make people smile, his family was desperately trying hard to keep theirs, know that their patriarch was risking his health with every performance.  Actor-director Eric Quizon, one of the sons of the Comedy King, said that his father was a heavy smoker.  Dolphy started smoking when he was a teenager.  Dolphy stopped smoking at the age of 45 after being diagnosed with emphysema.  However, Dolphy's lungs were already so black.

The damage to his lungs continued to progress with age, and by the time that Dolphy was 79 years old, he was diagnosed with COPD.  During that time, only his lifelong partner Zsa Zsa Padilla knew of his condition.  Dolphy tried hiding his illness to his children, but eventually Eric grew suspicious when he was asked to buy an oxygen concentrator.

The once vibrant Comedy King had become lethargic.  Aside from frequent coughs and shortness of breath, Dolphy would also complain of tiredness after taking few steps of walking.

From his yearly medical check-ups, Dolphy's hospital visits became more and more frequent until his doctors diagnosed him with COPD.  That was the time Dolphy decided to talk to his 18 children about his condition.  When the whole family learned about his illness, it became one of the difficult times for them, knowing that there is no cure for the illness.

In mid-2012, Dolphy was once again hospitalized and after battling 13 bouts of pneumonia, Dolphy succumbed to the disease on July 12th at the age of 83.

Kib with Mr. Epy Quizon during the celebration of World COPD Day.  He shared the struggles the whole family had during the time that Dolphy had COPD.

What is COPD?

COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, is a progressive lung ailment that makes breathing difficult and invariably leads to death.  COPD ranked 7th on the list of killer diseases in the country.  Sadly, only 2% of the 4.2 million Filipinos are properly diagnosed with the disease.  Those who suffer from the disease are mostly males.

According to the studies done by World Health Organization, cigarette smoking causes 80-90% of COPD cases.  Pollution, both indoor and outdoor, can also cause COPD.

People with COPD experience shortness of breath, abnormal sputum characterized by a mix of saliva and mucus, and chronic cough.  Most of the time, the diagnosis for COPD occurs when a person is in their 50s and 60s, but the symptoms can already start to manifest in their 40s.

Spirometry is a simple breathing test that gauges how much and how quickly air mves out of the lungs.  It measures the lung function in patients and determines the progression of the disease.

If COPD is detected on its early stages, patients will have fewer limitations on their activity.

#MakeTimeForDad

COPD is a familial problem.  Once a family member is affected, the rest of the family assumes the responsibility of taking care of the patient and they play an important role in a patient's treatment journey.

As part of the commemoration of World COPD Day, Glaxo SmithKline and the Philippine College of Chest Physicians (PCCP), are spearheading a new campaign called #MakeTimeForDad.

#MakeTimeForDad...before it's too late

The campaign encourages family members to upload 30-second videos on Facebook and Instagram, stating a list of things they want to do or wish they could have done with their loved fathers.  This would serve as a reminder for them to act now if they feel that their loved ones are at risk for COPD, and value each moment they spend with them.

Check this video about family members wish they had to do with their loved ones:

When this video clip was shown during the celebration of World COPD Day, I shed a tear.  I miss my papa so much.  I know I've never been expressive of my love for him, but I know I have been a good daughter to him.  Wherever he is, I know he is watching over me and Kib.

This campaign is a good reminder that we must love our loved ones while we can.  It's not yet too late.  Let us make our fathers know that we are there for them in good times and bad times.

Cherish the moments with your Dad

To end my blog, may this song inspire you to spend more quality time with our fathers.

Love Them While We Can

They tied our shoes, took us to school, patched our worn-out jeans
They soothed our tears and calmed our fears, and listened to our dreams
Somewhere along their golden years, their hair has lost its sheen
The notes to hymn one hundred ten crackle when they sing
And now they are alone, no children's voices fill their empty homes

Chorus:
We must love them while we can, we must love them while we can
For time just seems to hurry by, and the days slip into years
And the moments that we have will disappear
So love them while we can

The folks that taught us our first words, still have much to say
The silver secrets of the world, lie beneath those crowns of gray
As they approach the end, we change our role from children to best friend

Know the Color Trend for 2016!

When a year is about to end, we can hear a lot of reports about the major happenings of the year, the newsmakers, and what trend became popular on that year.  Apart from reminiscing the events, there were also news about the predictions of what will be the trend and big events on the coming year.  People are excited about these predictions as they also tend to prepare for it so that they will be 'in'.

Last November 26th, Nippon Paint (Coatings) Philippines, launched it second "Trend Beyond Colours", unveiling the nine key colour palettes featured across three inspirational palettes: "We Are One", "New Eco", and "Wonder-Lust".  Each theme features three unique colours, allowing consumers to explore and express their imagination.

One by one, the new colour palettes are revealed to the media

The first series, "We Are One", features modern colours reminding how new age technology and social media are constantly affecting our lives and keeping us connected wherever we are.  The palette features Founder Blue (NP B 1527D), Gray Knight (NP N 2001T), and Green Tuft (NP BGG 1666A), accentuating people's connection in a world without boundaries where digital devices are an indispensable part of our life today.

"We Are One"

The second series, "New Eco" celebrates the wonders and simplicity of Mother Earth.  Inspired by nature, "New Eco" brings consumers back in touch with the environment from its quietly stylish but ultimately comforting colours.  The palette reinterprets Asia's captivating nature, from the vintage soul of Asia to the serene oceans and mighty volcanoes personified by its three colours, Tavern Buff (NP N 1867P), Lush (NP BGG 1605T), and Volcanic Black (NP N 1918A).

"New Eco"

The third collection, "Wonder-Lust" embodies today's YOLO or "You Only Live Once" culture as it explores one's discovery for the perfect balance in life through our continual search for new interests, hobbies, experiences and adventures.  For consumers that aren't afraid of some excitement in their life, "Wonder-Lust" is equally big, bold, and bright in colours.  The lively colours features are Being Peach (NP YO 1219T), Fast Car (NP AC 2076A), and Blue Lullaby (NP PB 1550P).

"Wonder-Lust"

The nine colours are forecasted to drive utilization across various industries and applications in 2016 and 2017.

The nine trend colours were curated and handpicked by more than 50 design professionals, colour experts and enthusiasts from all over the Asia Pacific Region, including the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, China, India, Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan, and Japan, held at the Asia Pacific ChromaZone Colour Forecasting Workshop 2015  in Japan earlier this year.

Michael Chung, General Manager of Nippon Paint (Coatings) Philippines, explained why these palettes were chosen.  "To create these palettes, we have analyzed the effects of colours and how behaviour is influenced by colour, fashion, retail performance, lifestyle trends, and culture in today's world.  Nippon Paint's Trend Beyond Colors will inspire consumers to create their own designer styles drawing on the three themes handpicked by our designers.  The publication is packed with many photos and ideas, featuring our designers' personal tips and recommendations on how the colour palette can be cleverly and innovately applied on both interior and exterior surfaces,"  Chung further explained.

These colours can be coated to almost any imaginable surfaces, including wood, tiles, cement, slate, and glass.  Consumers can also use these colours to mimic the look and feel of three-dimensional textures of stone, marble, velvet, or satin using the series of Nippon Paint Momento Special Effect Paint.

Bloggers testing the new colour palettes

I can't wait to see these colours come alive in 2016!
